How COVID-19 Has Affected NY Jails & Prisons
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in positive cases from many prisoners and correctional staff, the U.S. prison system has released over 16,000 inmates to prevent the spread of the disease. Most inmates were convicted of non-violent charges or were not considered a threat to public safety if released.
On March 27, 2020, Governor Andrew Cuomo had approximately 1,100 low-level parole violators relased from local jails. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the release of 900 city jail inmates on March 31.
As of April 10, Westcherster County jails released 65 inmates, according to the county’s district attorney’s office. The released individuals either were serving terms of one year or less or were already scheduled for release prior to June 26.
An approval by a Bronx judge led to the release of 51 New York City inmates on April 13. The inmates were alleged parole violators.
