Start with the court papers and the next date.
Keep the appearance ticket, complaint, release papers and any order of protection together. Tell the firm whether you are in custody, have an upcoming appearance, or were asked to contact an investigator. Counsel needs the actual papers to identify the court and procedural posture. Do not rely on an old address, a general internet listing or an assumption that every Nassau matter follows the same route.
Charges and exposure
New York statutes define the elements of the criminal charges. The particular offense, prior history and procedural posture affect the defense and potential consequences. The firm’s Nassau practice includes DWI and vehicle allegations, assault, domestic violence, theft, drug offenses and weapon matters. Identify the charged sections so the discussion addresses your actual case.
A criminal case can affect employment, a professional license, driving, immigration status, family contact and housing. Explain these concerns at the beginning. An outcome that appears acceptable in criminal court may have consequences elsewhere that need separate review.
Defense and evidence review
The defense begins by reviewing the allegation and available evidence. Depending on the matter, relevant issues may include the lawfulness of a stop or search, how statements were obtained, witness identification, video, injury records, testing, and financial or electronic records. Counsel evaluates possible motions and defenses based on that record.
Preserve original messages, photographs and recordings. Make a list of witnesses and where relevant evidence may be located. Do not edit source material or discuss testimony with a protected person. Ask the attorney how records should be transferred securely.
Court process and deadlines
The next step may involve an arraignment, a scheduled appearance, discovery review, motions, a hearing, negotiations or trial. Felony and misdemeanor matters can take different procedural paths. The attorney should explain the current posture and which decisions must be made next. Continue following all release conditions and court orders unless the court changes them.
The New York courts’ official directory lists Nassau County District Court at 99 Main Street in Hempstead. Your notice and counsel’s instructions should guide where and when you appear. The firm’s Lynbrook office is separate from the courthouse.
